The Swift Current Comp. Colts volleyball team’s season came to a disappointing end as they failed to reach the medal matches at the 5A SHSAA provincial finals in Melfort on Saturday.

The Colts had entered the 12-team provincial finals as the South Regional champions after winning all 10 games the previous weekend in Estevan. They had won gold medals at five of nine tournament outings heading into provincials.

The Colts opened the tournament with a difficult match-up against the host Melfort squad on Friday morning and responded with a pair of dominant wins (25-12, 25-8).

They moved to 2-0 with a win in straight sets over the Regina LeBoldus Golden Suns (25-19, 25-13) that afternoon.

Friday evening, the Colts lost a first place showdown against Meadow Lake in three games (25-15, 17-25, 20-25) as the Colts failed to finish the Spartans off after winning the first game handily.

The 2-1 record left the Colts in second place in Pool A but they still received a bye into the quarter-finals along with the three first place teams.

Saturday afternoon, the Colts faced Saskatoon St. Joseph and fell in straight sets (22-25, 15-25) to see their season come to an end just one win away from a chance to play for a medal.

Prince Albert St. Mary defeated St. Joseph (25-23, 25-16) for their second straight 5A title that also extended Saskatoon’s championship drought to 14 years.

The quarter-final loss also extended the Colts provincial medal drought to nine years.

Next year’s team will have an entirely different look to it as the Colts graduate 10 of 12 players. Only current grade 10’s Ryker Wall and Brandon Schultz are eligible to return next season.

The Colts graduates include Curtis Dyck, Tyson Dyck, Braeden Martens, Dallin Martin, Kale Scherger, Ty Robertson, Chad Schultz, Colten Siemens, Ty Vandersteen, and Darby Zacharias.
