Swift Current’s Kelly Wiebe capped an amazing career with the University of Regina Cougars with his first ever Canadian Interuniversity Sport medal.
The decorated distance runner won the 3,000 metre race in Edmonton at the 2013 CIS Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Wiebe won the race in 8:08.13 to edge Windsor’s Matt Walters, who finished in 8:10.58, for the national title.
Wiebe helped the Cougars finish in seventh place in the Men’s Team Standings with 40.50 points. Guelph won the team event, followed by Windsor and Western.
Swift Current’s Megan Rumpel finished 10th in the country in the Women’s Indoor Pentathlon. Her best finish was in the 60 metre hurdles when she placed fifth in 9.06 seconds.
She also picked up points in the high jump when she finished sixth after clearing 1.60 metres. Rumpel was eighth in shot put with a 9.77 metre toss, 10th in the long jump with a 5.00 metre effort, and 11th in the 800 metre run in 2:37.91.
The Cougars finished tied for 16th in the Women’s Team Standings. Calgary won the event, followed by Toronto and Guelph.
