Track and field kicks into gear

Seven Southwest high school track and field teams were in Moose Jaw on Saturday for the 2009 Moose Jaw Invitational with the Swift Current Comprehensive High School posting the Southwest's top overall finish.

Seven Southwest high school track and field teams were in Moose Jaw on Saturday for the 2009 Moose Jaw Invitational with the Swift Current Comprehensive High School posting the Southwest's top overall finish.

The Comp. finished third in both the male and female team events for a third overall finish in the meet. Shaunavon followed in fifth spot with Maple Creek two spots behind in seventh. Pontiex and Herbert placed 12th and 13th respectively, while Gull Lake and Kyle tied for 16th.

Swift Current's Megan Rumpel, competing in the midget girls division, captured first-place finishes in the 80 metre hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump. The grade 10 athlete also set a new meet high jump record clearing 1.60 metres.

Also in midget girls action Morgan Speiss of Swift Current topped the discus and javelin events with throws of 23.87 metres and 23.06 metres respectively.

The Swift Current Comp. midget girls 4x100 m relay team also placed first in 55.71 seconds.

In the junior girls category Shaunavon's Sierra Benesh earned first-place finishes in the 200 metre, 400 metre, and the javelin with a 28.83 metre throw.

Herbert's Brittany Mathies also placed first in the junior girls high jump, clearing 1.47 metres.

In senior boys action Maple Creek's Joshua Schneider topped three events including a 12.25 metre effort in the triple jump as well as long jump and 100 metre titles.

Shauanvon's Cody Peskleway also topped the senior boys 200 metre race in 24.68 seconds while Kyle's Derek Argue toped the javelin with a 46.39 metre heave.
