A full range of sporting activities were held to showcase the Credit Union iplex during its grand opening weekend.

A gala ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Saturday to launch the weekend community celebration following the completion of the expansion and renovation project.

"We had to make a decision that was right for our community, and this was the right decision for our community," Mayor Sandy Larson explained during the opening. "We had to make a decision, it was plain and simple. Because we knew if we didn't make the decision at that particular time, it wouldn't have been made, because we wouldn't have been able to afford it," Larson said.

The expansion includes the addition of a six-sheet curling surface, a new social hall and viewing areas, new concession areas as well as a new mechanical ice plant to serve both rinks, additional wrap around seating, and other improvements.

"We'd like to thank the citizens of Swift Current for standing behind us while we took this project on. Thank you for your belief in this project, your commitment and your patience during the construction phase. This facility is one of the cornerstones of our community. It's a gathering place for families. It provides opportunities for the young and old to be involved in sports, leisure and community activities," she said.
