It was a golden finish to the outdoor soccer season for a trio of Swift Current soccer teams at the Summerfest 2014 tournament in Regina this past weekend.
The Swift Current United U18 boys added a final gold medal to their impressive season by topping the five-team division.
As the reigning provincial U18 champions, there was no shortage of motivation to wrap up their season on a winning note, but they tested with a trio of one goal decisions.
Swift Current won gold with a 1-0 victory over Medicine Hat on Sunday afternoon, avenging their only round robin loss when Medicine Hat posted a 2-0 win on Saturday night. Swift Current had a tough three day opening day test, starting Saturday with a 4-0 win over Weyburn and a 2-1 decision over Westman FC before losing to Medicine Hat. Swift Current topped the round robin thanks to a 2-1 win over Yorkton on Sunday morning.
The Swift Current U14 Boys enjoyed an unbeaten weekend to wrap up their season with a gold medal. In their closest game of the tournament Swift Current won the championship final 4-3 over UCT Everton. In round robin play Swift Current posted a 4-2 win over ACFC Pumas Black, a 4-1 win over UCT Everton, and a 5-3 win against ACFC Pumas Red.
It was an all Swift Current final in the Under 12 girls division, with both United teams winning their round robin pools before meeting for the gold medal. In the championship game Swift Current Wildfire posted a 3-2 win over Swift Current Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes won Pool A thanks to an 8-1 win over Excelsior FC, a narrow 2-1 win over REU Galaxy, and a 5-0 shutout over Yorkton.
The Wildfire rolled to an undefeated round robin pool victory with 7-0 wins over both the REU Hawks and a the Moose Jaw Storm, along with a 4-1 win over QC United Green.
The Swift Current U12 Boys enjoyed an undefeated record in their pool, but they failed to advance to the championship final thanks to goal differential. They opened with a dominating 7-0 win over the REU Force, they posted a 1-0 shutout win over QC United White, and they wrapped up the round robin with a 6-1 win over QC United Green.
The Swift Current Lightning Bolts were also held out of the Under 10 Girls gold medal game by the goal differential formula. The Lightning Bolts opened with a 4-0 win over QC United White but dropped a 5-2 decision to the ACFC Tigres in game two. They ended the tournament on a high note with a 2-1 win over QC United Green.
Swift Current TNT dropped a trio of close contests in their Under 10 girls games, falling 1-0 to both the QC United Green and ACFC Tigres, but they also finished on a winning note thanks to a 3-2 decision over QC United White.
