The Swift Current Ardens soccer team won the right to attend 3A Provincials with two wins at Regionals
The Swift Current Comp. Ardens soccer team earned the top seed out of the South Region at Provincials with two convincing wins Saturday.
The Ardens clinched a berth at Provincials with a 9-0 win over Balgonie and then added a Regional title to their collection with a 6-1 win over the rival Weyburn Eagles at the South Regional tournament in Moose Jaw.
The Ardens got off to a slow start against Balgonie and struggled to capitalize on many of their scoring chances with their season on the line. They eventually found their scoring touch and cruised to the shutout win behind three goals and two assists from grade nine Brooke Vallee. Grade nine Payton Schwan added a natural hat trick in the second half to help seal the win.
Christina Chase added a goal and an assist, while Andrea Erlandson and Santana Gowan also scored. Ashley Eben and Shayla Driver both chipped in single helpers.
Cassandra Furey-Cameron and Hannah Dyck shared the shutout in goal during a quite match at their end of the field.
The Ardens were slow out of the gate in the Regional final as well and they nearly paid for it when Weyburn generated a few early scoring chances. Furey-Cameron was equal to the test and the Ardens eventually took over the game as the first half progressed. Kelsey Therrien changed the momentum of the game for good in the final minute of the opening half when a Vallee shot ricocheted onto her foot at the top of the penalty area and she finished into the bottom corner.
The Ardens poured it on in the second half with four goals in 10 minutes. Their only blemish came in the 65th minute when Weyburn spanked a free kick into the top corner from 40 yards out.
Therrien led the attack with two goals and three assists during one her best offensive outings in an Ardens’ uniform. Gowan added two goals and an assist, followed by Erlandson with a goal and one assist. Haley Bissonnette scored late to close the scoring and Vallee added her 22nd assist of the season as the Ardens improved to 15-1-1 on the campaign.
The Ardens will be in Regina next weekend for the SHSAA 3A Provincial Finals where they are the defending sliver medalists.
