The Ardens soccer team trailed for over 45 minutes before clinching a fifth straight league title
The Swift Current Comp. Ardens kept an impressive unbeaten streak alive to win their fifth straight Moose Jaw High School Soccer League title Tuesday.
The Ardens trailed for over half the match but eventually broke through for three goals in the second half for a 3-1 win over the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones.
The Ardens were 9-0 in league play this season heading into the championship match, outscoring their opponents 67-1 along the way. But none of that mattered after Jessy Lee Saas scored in the 18th minute to stake the Cyclones to the all-important early lead.
The Ardens continued to dominate the game but could not find the back of the net as they trailed 1-0 at halftime. They pushed even further in the second half only to see quality shots sail over the crossbar and off the crossbar as well.
Grade nine Brooke Vallee finally tied the game when she got on the end of a Kelsey Therrien feed and calmly finished into the corner in the 65th minute. Santana Gowan made it 2-1 when Therrien’s cross landed in the box and she tapped it home. Therrien added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when she took advantage of a Central mistake in the penalty area to close the scoring.
The Ardens stretched their league unbeaten streak to 55 games over five seasons as grade 12’s Becky Neustaeter, Jessica Driver, and Shae Bolton finished the careers unbeaten in league play.
The Ardens will be back in Moose Jaw on Saturday for SHSAA 3A Regionals. The Ardens will need a top-two finish at the six-team tournament. They will face either Balgonie or Yorkton Regional on Saturday morning with their season and a trip to Provincials on the line.
