The Swift Current United Under-14 Girls came up with one of their most complete efforts of the season in a shutout win over Saskatoon’s Eastside Force Saturday.

The United Girls dominated possession from the opening whistle as they wore down their opponents for a 4-0 road win to clinch a playoff spot in the Saskatchewan Premier Soccer League.

Swift Current created ample scoring opportunities but seemed handcuffed as they did everything but finish into the goal against the province’s top goaltender. They finally earned some breathing room in the 20th minute when Brooke Vallee got on the end of an Ashley Eben free kick and headed it perfectly into the top corner for her fourth goal of the season.

The game remained 1-0 into the second half after Swift Current failed to connect on numerous quality scoring opportunities. They remained persistent in the second half and it paid off in the 52nd minute. Striker Mackenzie Froehlich wired a shot off the crossbar and teammate Rachel Dorais brought the rebound under control and converted for her eighth goal in nine games this season.

Froehlich got on the scoresheet four minutes later when she deflect home a Kirah Brown feed to make it 3-0 with her third goal of the season.

Vallee returned the favor to Eben in the 70th minute when she crossed a ball to her streaking teammate. The Eastside goalkeeper got her hands on the centering feed but Eben was first off the turf to knock home an inviting rebound to close the scoring.

The United fullbacks had a workmanlike effort on the back end as they held Eastside without a shot on goal over 80 minutes to help Hannah Dyck earn her third shutout of the season.

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Swift Current as they improved their record to 5-2-2 and still have hold onto hope of a first-place finish and a bye into the championship match.

The United Girls will now have a three-week break as the league pauses to allow players to fulfill their commitments to Team Saskatchewan.

Swift Current will play their final regular season game on August 10 when the league leading Saskatoon Aurora Concordes (6-2-0) visit Riverside Field at 1 p.m. Swift Current lost their only head-to-head meeting 1-0 on June 22 in Saskatoon.
