The Swift Current Comp. Colts soccer team opened their season with a second-place finish at their home tournament on Friday and Saturday.

They opened the tournament with a 3-3 draw against Moose Jaw Central on Friday. Brendon Burnay, Kirklan Wotypka, and Dylan Griffin each scored in the win.

They picked up their first win of the season with a 7-2 win over the Weyburn Eagles Saturday morning. Joan Torres paced the offense with a hat trick, followed by a two-goal outing from Griffin. Thomas Hammerton and Wotypka added singles in the win.

A slow start cost the Colts the tournament on Saturday afternoon as they fell behind 3-0 to the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders in a 3-2 loss to finish with a 1-1-1 record on the weekend. The Colts got second-half goals from Griffin and Austin Friesen in the loss but were unable to even the score.

Grade 12 goalkeeper Nic Gillies backstopped the Colts to the second-place finish.

“The team played pretty good. We pressured a lot, but we just have to hit the net more. Overall, we played pretty good as a team for only practicing for a week,” said the third-year Colt.

Gillies was voted co-captain of the team along with grade 11 central midfielder Austin Friesen.

“It was good,” said Friesen of the weekend. “We could have been a little bit more defensive but it was good. I thought that we played well as a team. For a team that had no cuts, we did really good.”

Next action for the Colts will be a trip north to Prince Albert for tournament action on Sept. 28-29.
