The Swift Current United Under-16 boys were strong gold medal favorites heading into Provincials and they did not disappoint with five straights wins, outscoring their opponents 26-6 along the way.

They opened their tournament Friday against Regina’s ACFC Pumas and dominated the game on their way to a 5-1 win.

Saturday, the U16 boys faced Saskatoon’s SUSC Chargers and walked away with a 5-0 win.

They wrapped up the round robin with a 3-1 win over Saskatoon’s Aurora Spurs.

The U16 boys’ dominance continued in the playoffs with an 8-3 win over the REU Thunder in the semifinals.

The championship final was more of the same as they dominated Saskatoon’s Aurora Spurs on their way to a 5-1 win to seal up the gold medals.

“It is great to see a group of children that have been together playing in our United program in Swift Current for a number of years that have worked very hard to work as a group and succeed and win what they have been working towards for a long time,” said coach Robert Chapman.

The United boys finished unbeaten in tournament play, with three tournament title as well as a Provincial Championship.

“I think it is the way they work together. They don’t ever quit on the ball, they just don’t quit, I think that is what makes them very special. They get along very well and they work very hard as a unit. There are a number of individuals very much in that group, but when they decide to pull together as a unit they succeed on weekends like this very much so.”
