The Swift Current United Under-14 Div II girls had an outstanding weekend at ACFC Summerfest in Regina where they played up one age division in U16.
They won all three games on Saturday to earn a spot in the championship final where they fell 4-0 to a talented and aggressive Yorkton United squad.
They opened a difficult Saturday schedule with a 5-0 win over Regina’s UCT Angels. Two veteran strikers led the attack as Santana Gowan scored the first four goals and Jade Addai chipped in a single to close the scoring. Hannah Dyck picked up the shutout as Kaylynn Ziegler and the United fullbacks held the Angels to limited chances to shoot on goal.
The searing afternoon heat slowed their second contest down but the United youngsters responded to the conditions better than the REU Freedom as Swift Current earned a pivotal 2-1 win. They got an early jump on Regina’s top U16 team with goals from Addai in the second minute and from Jordan Jacobson in the fourth minute on a free kick from distance. REU pushed back with a goal in the eighth minute before the two teams played to a stalemate over the final 52 minutes.
The United girls pulled off a third straight win that evening with a 5-0 victory over Regina’s ACFC Tigres led by a two-goal outing from Addai. Midfielder Brooke Vallee counted on a left-footed blast, Jacobson scored from a free kick for a second straight game, and Mackenzie Froehlich closed the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 35th minute.
Sunday, they ran into a fired up Yorkton United team in the final and were unable to find the back of the net. Froehlich did an admirable job marking Yorkton’s star striker but the Yorkton team used their size and experience to come out on top.
“When you consider we were playing up in the U16 Division, winning a silver medal is quite an accomplishment,” said coach Dale Perry. “In the final we came up against an extremely strong team from Yorkton. Although the girls played hard I don’t believe we gave them our best game. Having to play three games in extreme heat conditions the day before took a little out of us for the final.”
The United Under-14 Div III Girls were in Weyburn for a pair of exhibition games on Saturday as well. They shut out the Red Devils in both matches in their final games before Provincials.
The Div III girls opened the day with a 3-0 win. Alexandra Vance, Shae Barber and Brittney Lamontagne all scored and Charlene Burkey earned the shutout.
They followed up with a 2-0 win on a pair of goals from Barber, one coming off a header. Burkey shared the shutout with Stevie Gross in the win.
Next action for both teams will be Provincials in Regina on July 20-22.
