The Swift Current Foresters United U12 girl's indoor soccer team opened their season with a gold medal in Regina.

The Swift Current Foresters United under-12 girl’s indoor soccer team opened their season with a gold medal performance at the QC Breakaway Soccer Tournament in Regina.

In the first game against Regina, Swift Current United dominated play with sharp passing and a strong team effort resulting in a 6-0 victory. Mackenzie Froehlich and Ashley Eben paced the United attack with two goals each, followed by singles from Hailey Bisonnette and Shayla Driver.

In the second game versus Winnipeg, the United team had their hands full, as they suffered a 4-0 loss while battling against an older and larger U14 Winnipeg team that had been placed in the U12 girl’s pool.

In their next game, Swift Current United managed to squeak out a 3-1 victory over a very defensive Moose Jaw team. The United team worked hard in both halves to defeat Moose Jaw supporting Mackenzie Froehlich in all three Swift Current goals.

For the finals, Winnipeg chose to head home after defeating all three teams in their pool, leaving Moose Jaw and Swift Current to battle it out for the gold. Swift Current went on to defeat Moose Jaw 2-0 in the championship game led by two goals from Mackenzie Froehlich.

Coach Troy Froehlich noted outstanding weekend performances from goalkeeper Hannah Dyck, fullback Hailey Bissonnette, midfielder Becca Lidster, and strikers Ashley Eben and Mackenzie Froehlich.

“We passed the ball well,” explained Troy Froehlich.  “The girls controlled most of the play during their games.  The midfielders and forwards are now able to send the ball back and then move to open space to provide for more scoring opportunities this year.”

“They will need to continue to work on developing individual ball skills so that when they meet stronger teams they can protect the ball and control the play,” said Froehlich when asked what his team needs to improve on this season.

The U12 United girls will be right back at it when they attend the SISCO Tournament in Saskatoon on November 26-28.
