The Swift Current Comp. Ardens won their league record fifth MJHSSL title with a 4-0 win over the Vanier Spirits.
The Swift Current Comp. Ardens made history with their league record fifth Moose Jaw High School Soccer League championship on Tuesday.
The Ardens won their second straight title and fourth in the past five seasons with a 4-0 win in the championship final over Moose Jaw Vanier. League scoring champion Cassidy Andres paced the Ardens with two goals, while Kaylee Kyle and Brittany Schafer each added singles.
Grade 11 goalkeeper Kaylie Walker earned the shutout behind a dominating defensive outing from the Ardens fullbacks.
The win clinched a second consecutive undefeated season in the MJHSSL for the Ardens after a 7-0-1 regular season. The Ardens needed a last minute goal from Sloane Gowan and a 20-player shootout to advance past the Moose Jaw AE Peacock Tornadoes in last week’s semi-final.
Andres, a grade 10 striker, staked the Ardens to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of the championship game when she followed in Sage Gowan’s shot that bounced off the post and tucked it into the corner. From there the Ardens continued to dominate the play but were unable to score in the remaining 41 minutes of the half.
Kyle, a grade 10 centre halfback, made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when she neatly one-timed home a centering pass into the bottom corner from 18 yards out.
Andres then beat three defenders and fired a shot short-side from in close in the 65th minute to put the game out of reach.
Schafer punctuated the win with a perfectly placed top corner strike from 22 yards out to close the scoring in the 75th minute.
The Ardens will play their final home game on Saturday when they play in the South Regional final at 3 p.m. against either Weyburn or Estevan.
