Four Swift Current Foresters United Soccer club teams participated in the 2010 ACFC Winterfest indoor soccer tournament in Regina over the weekend with three teams advancing to their respective championship finals.
The U-12 girls opened the weekend with a 2-1 loss to the Prince Albert Celtics on a lone goal from Mackenzie Froehlich on Saturday morning.
That evening the U-12 girls got into the win column with a 2-0 victory over the Melfort Wildcats. Froehlich and Shayla Driver scored, while Hannah Dyck earned the shutout.
Sunday morning they claimed a 3-1 win over the ACFC Tigres Gold to advance to the final. Froehlich netted a pair and Brooke Vallee added a single.
In the championship final they came up just short in a 4-3 overtime loss to Prince Albert Celtic. Froehlich scored her fourth and fifth goals of the tournament, while Ashley Eben added a single.
The U-18 boys opened the tournament Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the Humboldt Hurricanes on goals from Tanner Graf, Dalton Fisher, and Conrad Flatrud.
That evening Ryan Stenstrom earned the shutout in a 5-0 win over REU Matrix. Tyler Nybo, Matthew Bazin, Flatrud, Jesse Yuzik, and Tyler Helms scored for Swift Current.
Sunday morning they suffered a 3-2 loss to Prince Albert Celtic on goals from Fisher and Bazin.
In Sunday’s championship final the U-18 boys bowed out with a 6-2 loss to Yorkton United on goals from Bazin and Yuzik.
The U-16 girls played at the U-18 division two level and opened play Friday with a 2-1 loss to Winnipeg’s Portage Trail on a Kaity Letwiniuk goal off a corner kick.
Saturday afternoon they rebounded with a 1-0 win over Prince Albert Celtic on a Celtic own goal in the final minute.
Next the United U-16 girls defeated the ACFC Tigres 3-2 to advance to the final.
In Sunday’s championship match the United girls lost 3-2 again to Portage Trail on goals from Letwiniuk and Brittany Schafer.
The U-14 United boys made their season debut and came away with an unexpected two win, one loss performance in division II play.
After opening the tournament with an eye-opening 8-1 loss on Friday to the Saskatoon Aurora Renegades, with the lone goal coming from Luis Cortes, Swift Current turned in some inspired team play to win their next two contests.
In Saturday's game the 12-player roster hustled during a solid overall effort in earning a 5-1 win over the Regina REU Inferno. Thomas Hammerton had a dominating four-goal performance and made a nifty pass to set up Swift Current's other goal by Brendon Burnay.
Swift Current wrapped up the tournament with a thrilling 2-1 win over the Regina AC Pumas, with Brooklyn Graf scoring the game winner in the final minutes. Hammerton collected the other United marker.
