Southwest Saskatchewan was well represented at the 2010 Jean Norman Provincial Competition in Prince Albert on Feb. 27 to 29.
The Southwest boasted one of its largest contingents of athletes in recent years, with 11 competitors attending this annual figure skating competition. Not only were the number of skaters up, but the number of medals brought home to the Southwest was impressive. The average medal haul over the last several years went from an average of four medals to a whopping 11 medals being brought home to the various southwest communities. There were a total of four bronze medals awarded in Freeskate, four silver and one bronze medal in Elements, and one bronze in Interpretive Programs.
Southwest participants were:
Cabri: Kyra Braaten (Elements - silver medal), Justine Garrett, Alayna McDonald, Taylor Undseth.
Consul: Ashley Stirling (Elements - silver medal, Freeskate - bronze medal).
Eastend: Shaila Humphrey (Freeskate - bronze medal).
Frontier: Jamey Reid (Elements - silver medal, Freeskate and Interpretive - two bronze medals).
Maple Creek: Jordanne Gold (Elements - silver medal, Freeskate - bronze medal).
Vanguard: Danica Finlay (Elements - bronze medal).
Swift Current: Amber Hansen.
Waldeck: Jayden Tanner.
The skaters represented the Southwest well with their good solid performances, and they were noted to have shown good sportsmanlike conduct while competing. Upcoming years are exciting with many of the newer skaters, while not placing in the top three, they turned in great performances and showed great promise.
Coaches have obviously been doing a great job, and are appreciated by the skaters for the hard work, dedication, and long hours they spend to make these skaters dreams come true. Coaches for the above named skaters were Dorothy Gillis, Lenni Gillis, Jordanne Gold, and Tracey Hansen.
