2013 Rolling Hills Sectionals
Rolling Hills Section athletes overcame some trying weather conditions Thursday at a track and field meet in Shaunavon to advance to the SWAC Championships this week.
Students from Swift Current, Gull Lake, Hodgville, Stewart Valley, Ponteix, Herbert, Wymark, and Waldeck all took part in the meet that was marred by heavy winds.
Swift Current Comp. athletes won all six of the aggregate titles in the high school categories.
Gull Lake’s Callen Boutin collected the maximum 40 points to win the Bantam Boys individual title. He finished 12 points ahead of Irwin’s Reagan Martin and 15 ahead of third-place Zach Undseth of Waldeck.
Boutin established a new record in the 100 Metre Dash in 12.40 seconds. He added another record in the 400 Metre Run in 1:04.66 and added a win in the 200 Metres in 26.62 seconds. Boutin won his fourth event in Shot Put with a 10.99 metre throw.
O.M. Irwin’s Darby-Jane Fletcher came out on top of the closest aggregate title race when she finished with 36 points in the Bantam Girls standings. Wymark’s Brittany Rousseaux was second with 35 points and Gull Lake’s Taylor Kirwan was third with 34 points.
Fletcher set a new record in the 800 Metres in 2:53.87. She also set a new standard in the 1,500 Metres in 5:56.54 as she won both events. Fletcher placed second in the 400 Metres in 1:13.32 and second in Discus with a 17.58 metre effort.
The Comp. Ardens’ Jade Addai had another dominating meet with 40 points to win the Midget Girls aggregate title. Gull Lake’s Kayla Kirwan was second with 34 points and Swift Current’s Larissa Markewich was third with 33 points.
Addai erased a 38-year-old record in the 100 Metre Dash in 13.34 seconds. She also won the 200 Metre Dash in 30.09 seconds. Addai blew away the competition in the 400 Metres in 1:08.03, over four seconds ahead of the field. She completed her perfect day with a first-place finish in Long Jump with a 4.09 metre leap.
The Colts’ Mark Magtoto raced to top spot in the Midget Boys Division with 38 points. Wymark’s Sterling Tschetter finished second with 32 points, followed by Quinton Reimer of Ponteix with 26 points.
Magtoto won the 100 Metre Dash in 12.25 seconds. He added a narrow win in the Long Jump with a 4.51 metre leap. Magtoto also won the Triple Jump, covering 10.33 metres. He placed second in the 200 Metre Dash in 27.30 seconds.
The Ardens’ Leia Anderson won the Junior Girls title with 34 points. Teammates Keely Chalk (31) and Brooklyn Haubrich (30) finished in second and third respectively.
Anderson collected 10 points for first place in the 3,000 Metres in 14:34.56. She added a second-place finish in Javelin with a top throw of 19.60 metres. She also finished second in the 800 Metres in 3:01.12 and second in the 1,500 Metres in 6:53.88.
Marcus Kouri had a perfect day for the Colts with 40 points to win the Junior Boys title. Teammate Logan Boyer was second with 36 points, followed by Herbert’s Frank Meyers.
Kouri picked up a win in the 100 Metre Dash in 11.66 seconds. He also won the 200 Metre Dash in 25.19 seconds. He added his third win in the 100 Metre Hurdles in 15.71 seconds. Kouri completed his perfect day with a win in the Long Jump with a top jump of 5.14 metres.
The Ardens’ Jordan Wellsch and Esther Derksen tied for top spot in the Senior Girls aggregate points race with 30 points each. Ponteix’s Tamara Goffinet and the Ardens’ Emilie Erlandson tied for third with 28 points.
Wellsch won the 200 Metre Dash in 32.01 seconds to pick up 10 points. She was second in the 100 Metre Dash in 15.02 seconds. Wellsch placed third in the 400 Metres in 1:19.76. She also placed third in the 80 Metre Hurdles in 19.25 seconds.
Derksen won the 100 Metre Dash in 14.84 seconds. She also won the High Jump after clearing the bar at 1.30 metres. She added her third win in Long Jump with a top jump of 4.31 metres.
Swift Current’s Dominic Vallee made it a clean sweep for the Colts and Ardens when he won the Senior Boys title with 38 points, edging out Vanguard’s Elias Carter by two points. Swift Current’s Reid Fritzke was third with 33 points.
Vallee won the 100 Metre Dash in 11.61 seconds to edge out teammate Winston Tschetter by .09 seconds. He added a win in the 200 Metres in 24.80 seconds and then topped the 400 Metres in 59.83 seconds. He placed second in the 100 Metre Hurdles in 17.31 seconds.
Gull Lake’s Cassie Jans also set a new record in the Bantam Girls 100 Metre Dash in 14.00 seconds. Jans added a second record in the 400 Metres in 1:11.91.
Irwin’s Deserae Unger tied the record in Bantam Girls High Jump at 1.40 metres.
The Swift Current Comp., the only 4A school at the meet, won all six team titles in the high school ranks. Gull Lake won the Bantam Boys team title with 137 points, six ahead of Irwin School. Wymark won the Bantam Girls team title, edging Gull Lake by only 1.5 points.
The SWAC Championships will be held May 29 in Shaunavon. The top athletes will advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championships in Moose Jaw on June 7-8.
