The sixth annual Battle of the Southwest volleyball showdown between Great Plains College and Miller College Edge again featured some spirited play between the Prairie Athletic Conference neighbouring teams.
While the games did not count in the standings as they had last year, volleyball fans were treated to some outstanding action at the O.M. Irwin School gymnasium.
In men's action, Millar College won an intense 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 three set victory where all games were decided by a margin of four points or less. Millar has now claimed five of the six Southwest Cup showdowns between the two colleges, winning back the trophy they lost for the first time last year.
The women's Sundogs team earned their second Southwest Cup title by rebounding from an opening set 20-25 defeat and going on to capture the trophy with wins of 25-18 and 25-13. The SunDogs have now won two of the past four Battle of the Southwest meetings after first winning in 2009.
The Edge vs Sundogs rivalry was also on the court in Pambrun on Oct. 18 when the teams meet in PAC league play.
The Edge women's team earned a four-set win over the visiting Sundogs (25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23) to improve to .500 in league play.
Millar College prevented the Sundogs men's team from moving into top spot in the PAC by winning a thrilling 24-26, 25-15, 25-21, 17-25, 15-12 in a marathon showdown.
The PAC operates with six teams in both the men's and women's divisions.
The SunDogs year boasts five individual five-set matches, along with two tournament-style weekends.
After tournament play in Moose Jaw on the weekend, both the Great Plains men's and women's have their final individual set game on Nov. 7 at the Palliser Panthers from Moose Jaw.
Millar College is also featured during the SIAST PAlliser tournament, with the Edge teams wrapping up their year on home court with a Halloween showdown with the SIAST Palliser Panthers.
The PAC Provincials are set for Prince Albert on Nov. 16 and 17, while the SunDogs will also be participating in the Western Canadian College Open Volleyball Championship in Olds, AB on Nov. 23 and 24.
