The SWAC senior basketball league championship finals are set with both defending champions poised to defend their titles.

On the girls’ side, the defending champion Shaunavon Silhouettes upset the host Herbert Laurels 65-61 on Tuesday. Shaunavon had a big game from Lacey Pritchard, who netted 26 points, while Becca Hansen added another 15.  On the Laurels’ side, Syd Seib had 18 points and Miranda Haughian added 13.

The undefeated Frontier Raiders hosted the Swift Current Comp. Junior Ardens and persevered to win 63-56. Samantha Glenn led the Raiders with 10 points, while Jenna Krahn had a game-high 21 points for the Ardens.

Frontier will host Shaunavon in the SWAC championship final after the February break in a rematch of last year’s final.

On the boys’ side, it was the undefeated Shaunavon Shadows defeating the fourth seeded Maple Creek Rebels by a score of 83-35 on Wednesday.  Matt Benesh poured in 29 points to lead the Shadows with Jesse Voll adding an additional 21 points.  Top scorer for Maple Creek was Markus Beveridge with nine points.

In the other semi on Feb. 13, it was second ranked Swift Current Junior Colts over the third seeded Herbert Laurels 64-53. The Junior Colts were led by Reid Fritzke and Matt Bissonnette with 13 points apiece.  Phil Braun had 14 points and Leighton Dueck added 13 for the Laurels.

The boy’s SWAC championship final will also be a rematch between the host Shadows and the Junior Colts after the school break.
