The Swift Current Comp. Colts placed fourth at their annual home tournament, The Speedy Creek Shootout, over the weekend.

They opened the tournament with a dominating defensive performance in a 55-18 win over the Mount Royal Mustangs.

Saturday, they were bounced from title contention with a 76-61 loss to the North Battleford Comp. Vikings.

They lost to the Yorkton Regional Raiders 52-50 in the bronze medal game to conclude their tournament on Saturday evening.

Moose Jaw Central defeated North Battleford 93-74 in the championship final.

The Colts allowed a tournament low 48.7 points per game. “Overall, I was quite pleased with how we played defensively.  We did an excellent job against Mount Royal keeping the ball out of the key,” said Colts coach Adam Jackson.

“North Battleford was bigger than us and they killed us on the offensive glass.  Our zone defensive rotations were poor in the first half, and it left #20 Rob Gaetz open under the basket for easy shots. Against Yorkton we were trailing at half but we took the lead in the third quarter; we could only muster seven points in the fourth quarter.  We only had one team foul late in the fourth quarter, so when we tried to foul it killed too much time.”

The Colts averaged 55.3 points per game on the offensive end.

“Offensively, we shared the load; perimeter players were taking and making shots, and our inside players weren't afraid to attack the offensive glass.  Our defensive pressure led to some good shots in transition.  We need to improve our field goal percentage on shots near the basket, as well as our free throw shooting,” said Jackson.

The Colts season record sits at 9-11 this season after the weekend and an exhibition win over Highwood High School from High River, AB on Thursday.

The Colts and Ardens will co-host a tournament this weekend at the Comp. The Ardens will open their tournament on Friday at 3:45 p.m. against Moose Jaw Central. They will also face Warman on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and the Shaunavon Silhouettes at 6 p.m.

The Colts will begin their tournament against Estevan on Friday at 8:30 p.m. The Colts will also face Warman on Saturday at 10:05 a.m. and the Shaunavon Shadows at 7:35 p.m.
