Shadows off and running on the hardwood

The Shaunavon Shadows recent domination on home court continued as they won their annual home tournament for the 13th time in the past 16 years.

The Shadows won all three games of the six-team event by at least 26 points for their 16th home tournament title in the event’s 51-year history.

Matthew Benesh filled the stat sheet in the championship final during a 79-53 win over the Swift Current Comp. Senior Colts. The veteran guard scored 35 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, and dished out seven assists.

Jesse Voll added 26 points and 13 rebounds, Jay Selvig finished with 13 points and five assists, and Dillan Carlson contributed seven assists and four steals. Kurtis Wegren led the Colts with 14 points in the loss.

The Shadows also defeated Assiniboia 86-34 led by Benesh with 31 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Selvig had 17 points and two assists. Voll added 15 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals. Liam Collins and Carlson each added 10 points and Marty Funk had four points to go along with 11 rebounds.

The Shadows third win came at the expense of Kindersley as the Shadows ran away with a 72-45 victory. Benesh led the barrage with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. Voll added 12 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. Carlson also had 11 points, five assists, and five steals.

Benesh, Voll, and Selvig were all named to the tournament all-star team, where they were joined by Wegren and Kindersley’s Kayden Johnson.

The Shadows will open the SWAC regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Herbert to face the Laurels.
