Three Southwest high school girls volleyball teams took part in SHSAA volleyball provincials over the weekend.
The Fox Valley Legends were the top Southwest team with a fourth-place finish at 1A provincials in Midale/Yellowgrass. The Legends finished second in their round robin group with a 3-1 record. They moved into the semi-finals with a quarter-final win over Quill Lake in three games (25-20, 8-25, 25-16).
The Legends would fall to Loreburn in the semi’s (15-25, 16-25) and to Holdfast in the bronze medal match (23-25, 26-28).
The Legends opened the round robin Friday with a win over Medstead (25-15, 22-25, 25-18), a loss to Holdfast (17-25, 19-25), and a win over Mossbank (25-15, 25-19). They clinched second spot with a win over Rouleau (25-16, 25-19) on Saturday morning.
The Mankota girls were also in 1A action, but lost all four matches and missed the playoffs. Mankota suffered round robin losses to Saskatoon Christian Centre Academy (12-25, 9-25), Quill Lake (13-25, 17-25), Loreburn (12-25, 8-25), and Midale (25-21, 13-25, 15-25).
Loreburn downed Saskatoon CCA in straight sets in the 1A gold medal match.
The Cabri Cougars carried the Southwest’s hopes in the 2A classification in Hepburn. The Cougars finished in third place in the round robin with a 1-3 record before being eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Cudworth Huskies (20-25, 21-25).
Cabri opened the tournament with losses to Redvers (25-19, 25-27, 10-25) and Foam Lake (14-25, 22-25). They rebounded with a win over Loon Lake Ernie Studer (25-12, 16-25, 26-24) before concluding the round robin with a loss to Hepburn (17-25, 21-25).
Foam Lake would go on to defeat Hepburn in the 2A championship final.
