The Speedy Creek Racing Association’s Season Opener is now only days away as they get set to open another stock car racing season in Swift Current.
“The club is really excited. It is going to be a year of big events for us and everyone is eagerly anticipating it. The guys have worked really hard to get their cars going and ready. It is the same as every other year, you get that anticipation just to get out on that track and let her go,” said SCRA spokesman Colin Johnston, who also tied for 10th in Speedy Creek Raceway IMCA Modifieds points last season.
The Season Opener will include racing in all four local classes, including the debut of a brand new racing class.
“The REM Enterprises Thunder Trucks are an entry level class stock truck with no locked rear ends, but all the safety features of racing. We are trying to introduce a new affordable class into Swift Current. Of course right off the bat you are not going to have the numbers that you always wish for. But we want to show people that you can get into racing for a relatively inexpensive price and it is something that everyone can recognize, being that this is Saskatchewan there are trucks everywhere,” said Johnston.
He expects the Speedy Creek Raceway at Kinetic Exhibition Park to be faster than ever.
“The track will be ready to go. We put some new clay on it at the end of last season… It is looking like we could have a very, very fast track. We have always had one of the fastest tracks in Western Canada for dirt. With the added clay for this season it looks like we will have one of the fastest if not the fastest track in all of Western Canada.”
The Season Opener will double as Kids Day with some additional festivities.
“For Kids Day, with all the local classes running this year, we will have our traditional time when we bring all of our cars on the front straightaway. The kids get to come down and meet the drivers. They have autographed cards, they have candy, and they get to come and check out the cars up close. It is our chance to say to the kids thanks for coming and give them some treats.”
The Season Opener is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Speedy Creek Raceway.
