The Swift Current Comp. Colts won all three games, including a win over the rival Shaunavon Shadows, to capture their own mini tournament over the weekend.
The Colts, ranked 10th in the province among 4A teams, opened Friday with a 79-45 win over Biggar as they wore down the Blazers after a close opening quarter.
Sidney Heuer paced the Colts with 18 points, while guard Dallin Martin had 10 rebounds. Colten Siemens had five steals and Kale Scherger added two blocked shots.
Saturday morning the Colts overcame another slow first quarter to defeat Canora 63-51 led by 13 points and four assists from Connor Chau. Matt Pavlovic added four assists and a steal, while Justin Kehler had seven rebounds and Scherger blocked two more shots.
In the final game of the tournament the Colts ran their way to a 50-29 lead before the Shaunavon Shadows staged a furious comeback until Connor Chau made a lay-up for the Colts and the Shadows missed a buzzer beating three-pointer in a 57-54 Colts’ victory.
Jordan Hildebrand led the Colts with 15 points and Riley Knox pulled down 11 rebounds to improve the Colts to 12-13 on the season.
The Colts were supposed to play in a conference tournament this weekend but with one team dropping out they will now sit and wait for three other conference tournaments to wrap up before they learn their regional fate the following weekend.
Shaunavon, the third ranked 3A team in the province, opened the tournament with a 60-49 win over Canora on Friday.
Saturday afternoon they followed up with a dominating 83-33 victory over Biggar.
The Shadows will be off to a very difficult 3A conference tournament this weekend in Moose Jaw where they will be looking to earn one of two spots at regionals the following weekend among the five teams in attendance.
