The MCEDA holds regular meetings once a month, with a great attendance record, and growing membership. Here we discuss bright ideas for future functions and promotions for the Morse community.
We saw a terrific year of growth in 2008 with two new houses being built and four houses being moved into town. We have had 20 serviced lots sold in 2008 with development within two years on the majority of these lots, as per town policy. We recently have had some really nice family dwellings come available for purchase and rent which seem to be snapped up pretty quickly.
With Morse being an easy commutable drive to Swift Current or Moose Jaw it is quite appealing for those who like a quiet safe community to raise a family with affordable living. Don't underestimate this small town, it has lots to offer with a skating rink, curling rink, gymnastics, hunter safety, 4-H Club, Horse & Pony Club, bowling alley, rec centre, golf course plus others. One of our best kept secrets is a wonderful Museum, possibly one of the best in Saskatchewan, with over 2,000 visitors last year including many school tours.
The community has been aggressive in infrastructure upgrading in order to attract community growth. An estimated 90 per cent of the sewer and water lines have been replaced over the last number of years, and the community is completing a major water treatment upgrade in the next few years. The Morse community has a series of tax concessions for residential and business properties, this combined with access to transportation and shipping on the TransCanada highway, makes Morse an ideal location for both residential and commercial.
We will again be hosting a home and garden spring trade show on March 14th, last year booths were sold out. We had all types of booths for all ages and many products available for the shoppers to purchase on the spot. You will be able to obtain a down loadable application soon online by visiting our website www.morsesask.com
Our committee is planning to have an economic development speaker come in and give further suggestions for growth of our community as we have the ideal location for business development in Western Canada. The Province is growing including rural Saskatchewan. We're furthering the success and growth of existing businesses, helping small and medium business's grow their markets globally and regionally.
Some of our local business's saw tremendous growth in the last year one being the Morse Pioneer Co-op, who employs seven people, had growth of 20 per cent in 2008. Also the Morse Credit Union experienced substantial growth as well with a 4.5 per cent increase in asset growth. There were several businesses' that also had expansions in the past year as well. Olynick Agro sold their fertilizer and chemical portion of their business to Viterra, bringing added advantages to the Morse community, such as; new employees, long term stability and the possibility of expansion and more services offered on the grain side of the agricultural industry. In return by Viterra purchasing Olynick Agro they have now gained access to Liquid Fertilizer in the area. Olynick Agro will continue operating as a custom spraying business as Ryan Olynick has purchased this portion of the business.
