Whether you are booking the i-plex for a wedding or having a birthday party at the Aquatic Centre, you will have to deep deeper into your pockets as the city Recreation and Parks Department has up their prices.

"Today we brought forth the 2008-2009 Recreational Facility rates. This year we have proposed a five per cent increase in which council has approved," said Nicole Peno, Recreation Scheduling Superintendent for the City of Swift Current.

"This rate increase is to help us keep at our 40 per cent recovery rate which we are mandated by council."

Even though it is only a five per cent increase, the Recreation and Parks Department takes the increase into consideration when it comes to the general public, but needs to still meet the recovery rate.

"It is definitely a process that we take hugely into consideration because we want all of our community members to look forward to using the great recreational facilities that we do have in our community. However we also have to meet that 40 per cent recovery rate. It is something we took into consideration.

Peno added when they took the increase into consideration they compared the City of Swift Current to several other communities in Saskatchewan.

"We looked at our increases, our operational costs for the year as well as we compared them to the other communities throughout Saskatchewan. So we usually do a comparison with 12 communities, including Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Humboldt, Biggar, Meadow Lake, those that are in comparison to us just to see where we are at."

Peno says users will see increases at a majority of the city recreational facilities.

"This applies to most of our recreational facilities. From parks and open spaces, to the Aquatic Centre, Credit Union i-plex, Fairview Arena, Fairview Pool, the Recreation Centre and the Pavilion. So most of all the recreation facilities."

Even with the increases, Swift Current still has some of the lowest user fees in Saskatchewan.

"We are really happy to say that even with the five per cent increase we have been able to keep at an average of most of those facilities lower than other communities across the province. I think that is something that we can be really happy with."

The new rates will take effect Sept. 1 and will remain the same until August 31, 2009. The Recreation and Parks Department will re-evaluate the rates at that time.
