This weekend will be two nights of action that no racing fan will want to miss as the Speedy Creek Racing Association hosts the Wolff Pack Run on Saturday and Sunday.
Up for grabs will be $40,000 worth of cash and prizes as IMCA Modifieds from across North America descend on Swift Current in search of a piece of the cash payout.
"This is definitely the biggest one that we have ever hosted here in Swift Current. The Wolff Pack Run started in 2002 in Edmonton and has run in Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge. This is the first time that it will be held outside of Alberta when we are running it in Swift Current," said SCRA spokesman Kevin Funk. "This is probably one of the biggest payouts in Western Canada running on a dirt track for the Modifieds."
Swift Current will host the sixth edition of the Wolff Pack Run. Last year it was held in Lethbridge, where Fort Francis, Ontario's Joey Galloway was the champion, followed by Shaunavon's Jason Lacelle. Fort Qu'Appelle's Wes Maley, another regular at SCRA events, finished fourth. The large cash and prize payouts has attracted interest from across the continent explained Funk.
"We have one car confirmed from Mexico. There will be a number of cars coming from northern states all the way across, Washington, and cars from the Dakota Tour from Montana and North Dakota. Quite a few cars from Alberta and a number of cars will be coming from Estevan. We are hoping for between 40-50 cars.
"Right now in IMCA Canada points, Bob Heffer, a local driver from right here in town, he is running in second. Another local driver, Jason Lacelle from Shaunavon, was last year's IMCA Canadian champion. Colin Johnson I think is sitting 12th out of 50-some vehicles right now. Corey Mohr out of Moose Jaw, Terry Davidson out of Rosetown, these cars are fast and it is going to be a good time."
For those not familiar with the IMCA Modifieds, Funk explained that they have plenty of power. "As far as engine size, most guys are running 355-400 cubic inch engines. Horsepower is whatever you can get out of it with having a normally aspirated engine. Most cars are running on alcohol. I would say most cars are between 500-600 horsepower on the cars that are about 2,300-2,400 pounds. They are rockets," he said with a laugh.
Racing will begin at 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Speedy Creek Raceway at Kinetic Exhibition Park. The Hobby Stock cars will also be running on Saturday, while the Street Stock cars will be in action on Sunday. Advanced tickets were on sale leading up to the event but tickets will now only be available at the door for $20.
