Thirteen Colt and Arden wrestlers traveled to Edmonton to compete in the University of Alberta Golden Bear Wrestling Tournament held on Saturday.

This was the first time the team traveled to this tournament, which featured over 750 wrestlers from across Western Canada.

Kaleb Smith captured a gold medal in the male 85 kg weight class.  Smith battled through 40 wrestlers to eventually earn gold.  He fought six matches on his way to the championship.

“Kaleb put together a tournament which showed improvements in strength and conditioning,” noted coach Allan Blanke. “He also uses smart strategies, waiting to capitalize on any error made by the opponent. Kaleb is an outstanding athlete with great balance.  He is looking for a medal at this year’s provincial championships.”

Dale Buckingham earned a bronze medal in the male 115 kg category. “Dale displayed incredible strength and determination in his matches. Several matches were very tight but Dale simply never gives up.  Dale also looks to medal in this year’s provincial championships,” pointed out Blanke.

Next action for the Colt and Arden Wrestlers is this weekend at Saskatoon’s Bedford Road Collegiate.
