Swift Current Broncos forward Cole Johnson battles for room in front of the Moose Jaw Warriors net guarded by defenceman Josh Brook and goaltender Brody Willms during Tuesday's WHL preseason game in Moose Jaw. Johnson scored the Broncos opening goal in a 4-3 come-from-behind overtime victory.
The Swift Current Broncos opened the preseason with a 4-3 overtime win over the host Moose Jaw Warriors Tuesday.
Luca Leone scored twice, Travis Child made 40 saves, and Tyler Steenbergen scored the overtime winner for the Broncos.
Steenbergen, 16, scored 34 seconds into overtime to complete a two-point outing for the Broncos' 2013 first round draft pick. Cole Johnson, the Broncos' second round pick in 2013, also scored to even the score at 1-1 in the first period.
Ryan Bowen scored twice for the Warriors and Noah Gregor added a single. Brody Wilms suffered the loss with 29 saves on 33 shots.
Leone, who was acquired from the Vancouver Giants in the offseason for Bobby Zinkan, scored in the second period to tie the game 2-2 and in the third period to equalize at 3-3 and force overtime.
Child, who seems poised to earn the backup role behind Landon Bow, stopped 40 of 43 shots and helped the Broncos kill off eight of nine shorthanded situations.
Next up for the Broncos will be a game Saturday against the host Edmonton Oil Kings.
