The Canadian Cowboys' Association opened the 2014 rodeo season over the weekend with the Tisdale Rambler Rodeo.
Only a few Southwest cowboys were in Tisdale for the season opening event. The only Southwest cowboys to win money at the Rambler Rodeo were Waldeck's Tee and Tyce McLeod. The McLeod boys placed third in Team Roping in 9.0 seconds for $684. The 15-team event was won by Clint Weston (Cardston, AB) and Brady Chappel (Moose Jaw).
Brandon's Kirk Thompson won Saddle Bronc with an 82-point ride on Buttercup to claim $460 with one of only two qualified rides. Brock's Clayton Strutt won Bareback with a 76-point ride on Big Shot for $432.
Nine cowboys tried their hand at Bull Riding and Stoughton's Jeffrey Moretto was the only one to last eight seconds for 80 points on 99 reasons to take home $547.
Cremona, Alberta's Aaron Miller emerged from a 12-man Tie Down Roping field to win $459 in a time of 11.3 seconds. Landon Beardsworth, roping out of Red Deer County, took top spot in Steer Wrestling in 4.8 seconds for $518.
Rosthern's Marissa Epp beat out 28 other cowgirls to win Ladies Barrel Racing in 13.1 seconds for $772 in Tisdale.
Lumsden's Madeline Reimer won Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 13.85 seconds and Esterhazy's Mason Helmeczi took top spot in Novice Bareback with a 60-point performance.
The CCA will continue the early stages of the season on April 18-19 in Manitoba at the Pierson Indoor Rodeo. The first CCA rodeo in the Southwest this season will be the Dean Anthony Memorial Rodeo in Mankota on May 23-24.
