Swift Current Broncos' prospect Tyler Steenbergen helped the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs win the Alberta Midget Hockey League Thursday.

The two-time defending national champions won the best-of-five series in four games over the Lloydminster Baker Hughes Bobcats. They clinched the series on the road with a 4-0 win when Steenbergen scored to make it 2-0 with 11 seconds left in the first period.

The Sylvan Lake native led his team with six playoff goals and finished tied for fourth in league playoff scoring with 11 points in 11 games.

Red Deer had won game one 2-0 on March 21 when Steenbergen picked up an assist. Lloydminster replied two days later with a 4-2 win at home and Steenbergen scored in the loss. Red Deer took a 2-1 lead on March 25 with a 4-3 win on home ice when Steenbergen added two assists and they clinched the series two days later.

Red Deer will now host the British Columbia champion Okanagan Rockets in the Pacific Regional as they attempt to earn a spot in the Telus Cup in Moose Jaw. The two teams tied 3-3 during the Mac's World Invitational Tournament in Calgary earlier this season.

Broncos’ prospect Cole Johnson played for Lloydminster in the championship series and he had assists in games two and three. He finished with seven points in 12 playoff games.

Steenbergen was the 12th overall pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. He registered 31 points in 32 games during his rookie season the AMHL.

Johnson was the Broncos' second round pick, 34th overall, in 2013. He finished second in league goal scoring with 28 goals and was fifth with 45 points in 31 games.
