Book makes 24 saves in road win over Saskatoon Stars

The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats opened the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs with a 2-1 win over the host Saskatoon Stars Wednesday.

Jasey Book made 24 saves to help stake the Wildcats to an early series lead.

The Wildcats fell behind when Julia Rongve scored for the Stars only 2:24 into regulation. The Wildcats tied the game with 2:39 left in the first period when veteran Karlie Bell scored a powerplay goal with an assist from rookie Kate Scidmore.

Scidmore score the eventual game winner only 2:56 into the second period with an assist from Brooklyn Haubrich.

A large portion of the game was played by the special teams units. The Wildcats scored once on 11 powerplay opportunities and held the Stars scoreless on nine man-advantages.

The two teams tied in the regular season with 42 points each but Saskatoon earned home ice advantage with two more regulations wins. They also tied the season series with both teams winning twice at home.

Game two of the best-of-five series will be played Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at Fairview Arena.

In other SFMAAAHL playoff action:

Top seeded Regina needed overtime to defeat the last-place Battlefords Sharks to take a 1-0 series lead. Emma Waldenberger scored the overtime winner and Rachel Mitchell made 46 saves to keep the Sharks in the game.

Second seeded Weyburn defeated Melville 4-2 to earn a 1-0 serles lead. Four different skaters scored for Weyburn as they limited the Prairie Fire to 10 shots on goal.
