Broncos skate to important 6-2 win over Pats

The Swift Current Broncos scored the first five goals of the game while powering to a 6-2 win over the visiting Regina Pats.

Swift Current is now a perfect 5-0-0-0 against Regina this campaign, but more importantly they close the gap to six points in the East Division standings. Regina leads the Division with a 35-23-3-3 record, ahead of the second place Broncos who are 31-24-2-6.

The Broncos broke the game open with three consecutive goals in the last half of the opening period. Colby Cave scored his 29th goal of the season on the powerplay to open a 1-0 lead at the 11:57 mark of the period. Just 2:18 later rookie Glenn Gawdin notched his eighth of the season. The Broncos made it a 3-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the period when Coda Gordon counted his 23rd of the year to cap a period the Broncos outshot Regina by a 16-11 margin.

Swift Current continued to dominate play in the middle period, outshooting the visitors 18-9 and using goals from Jay Merkley and Jake DeBrusk to open a 5-0 advantage after 40 minutes of play. Merkley now has 26 goals on the campaign, while DeBrusk also scored in the third period in collecting his 11th and 12th goals of the year.

Regina replied in the third period with goals from Braden Christoffer and Kyle Burroughs.

Bronco netminder Eetu Laurikainen turned aside 27 of 29 shots while improving to 21-19-0-5 on the year.

Regina starting goaltender Daniel Wapple gave up three goals on 16 first period shots while taking the loss. Dawson MacAuley kicked out 22 of 25 shots during his two period relief appearance.

Swift Current went three for seven with the man advantage, while Regina failed to score on five powerplays.

The Broncos now play three of their nine remaining games this weekend, travelling to Regina for their final season meeting with the Pats on Friday, before settling in at home for a Saturday night contest against Lethbridge and a Sunday showdown with Brandon.
