Swift Current Broncos - Light It Up

The Swift Current Broncos ended a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the host Moose Jaw Warriors Saturday.

One night after suffering their worst loss of the season in Brandon, Graham Black led the way with four points as the Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead that would hold up for a badly needed victory.

The Broncos earned an early lead with goals from Cavin Leth and Brett Lernout 3:03 apart in the opening eight minutes of the contest. They added goals from Black and Jay Merkley in the final 2:02 of the period to lead 4-0 after one period with a 16-6 margin on the shot clock.

Merkley scored the only goal of the second period while shorthanded, his 24th goal of the season.

The Warriors got third-period goals from Jack Rodewaald, Brayden Point, and Josh Uhrich, while Colby Cave added a powerplay goal for the Broncos.

Eetu Laurikainen made 23 saves to improve to 18-16-0-5, while Zach Sawchenko suffered the loss with 39 saves on 45 shots to fall to 5-8-0-0.

The Broncos improved to 27-21-2-6 and remain sixth in the Eastern Conference, while Moose Jaw dropped to 14-32-3-5.

The Broncos will be back on home ice Sunday when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings at 7 p.m. at the Credit Union iplex in a battle for top spot in the East Division.

Bronco Bits: The Broncos were without defenseman Bobby Zinkan and forward Dakota Odgers after both were suspended 'for actions at Brandon' on Friday. Odgers was suspended one game, Zinkan was suspended three games, and the team was fined $500 for an incident late in Friday's 8-1 loss in Brandon.
