2013/14 Wildcats

The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats proved that they can skate with the Saskatchewan Female Midget Hockey League’s top team in two close losses to the Regina Rebels at home.

Saturday, the Wildcats suppressed the high-octane Rebels to earn a single point in a 2-1 shootout loss. The Rebels led 1-0 for almost two full periods after Emma Waldenberger scored midway through the opening frame. The Wildcats forced overtime when captain Brooklyn Haubrich scored with 12:08 left in the third period with assists from Kayla Kirwan and Kate Scidmore.

The Wildcats outshot Regina 4-1 in overtime after being outshot 23-12 in regulation but neither team was able to score.

Regina got goals from Chelsea Perepeluk and Delaney Frey in the shootout and none of the three Wildcats were able to beat Tatum Shand, who earned the win with 16 saves. Brooklyn Weisgerber suffered the shootout loss with 24 saves on 25 shots.

The Wildcats have now lost their last four shootouts after opening the season with four straight wins. They have scored on six of 43 shootout attempts and allowed seven goals on 42 attempts this season.

Sunday, the Wildcats were clearly the better team but fell behind early and were unable to pull equal. They played a strong opening period but trailed 3-0 on Regina goals from Annamaria Mamais, Frey, and a late powerplay goal from Erica Rieder.

The two teams combined for only six shots during a scoreless second period. The Wildcats put the pressure on Regina in the third period, outshooting them 10-5 in the process. Haubrich and Karlie Bell made it a one-goal game with goals 4:32 apart but they were unable to beat Summer Roberts for a third goal. Hannah Riemer, Scidmore, and Haubrich all added assists.

Jasey Book suffered the loss with 13 saves on 16 shots. Roberts made 20 saves to improve to 12-1 for Regina.

The Wildcats finished the weekend in fourth spot in the SFMAAAHL with a 9-10-4-4 record. Regina has already locked up top spot with a sparkling 21-2-1-1 record.

The Wildcats will play a crucial playoff race game on Wednesday when they hosted the Notre Dame Hounds at 8:15 p.m. at Fairview West Arena to conclude the regular season.
