The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires played two good periods against the Battlefords Stars Thursday. Undisciplined play got the better of them in the middle stanza as they allowed three second-period goals in a 6-2 win in their first game of 2014.
The host Legionnaires stayed with the Stars for almost 30 minutes before the visitors scored. The Stars added two powerplay goals before the second period was over for a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The Legionnaires got goals from rookies Tanner Brewster and Kolby Johnson in the third period but were unable to get any closer than a 4-2 deficit in the loss. Gage Misskey, Chaseton Sare, Morgan Greve, and Johnson added assists.
Battelfords finished four-for-10 on the man-advantage, while Swift Current connected on one-of-eight powerplay opportunities.
Josh LaFramboise led the Stars with two goals and three assists and Josh Bly added a pair of goals.
Kyle Zinger took the loss for Swift Current with 30 saves on 36 shots. Rylan Toth made 18 saves in the win.
The Legionnaires’ ninth straight loss leaves them with a 6-20-2-1 record. Battlefords sit third in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League with a 19-6-4-1 record.
The Legionnaires will be off this weekend before visiting the Regina Pat Canadians (15-1-3-1) on Wednesday.
