The Swift Current Broncos now have just one shootout win in six attempts after a setback against the Moose Jaw Warriors
The Swift Current Broncos were only able to secure a single point in another shootout loss in their first game back from a long holiday break Friday.
The Broncos played only one good period against the Moose Jaw Warriors, which was enough to earn a single point in a 3-2 shootout loss.
"We just came off the Christmas break so it is always tough coming to play off the Christmas break," said defenseman Brett Lernout. "We only really showed up to play in the third period. We came back from a 2-0 lead. I mean we got one point out of it but I think we should have pulled through and got two."
Brayden Point and Sam Fioretti both beat Eetu Laurikainen high to the glove side to secure win for Moose Jaw in the shootout. Bobby Zinkan opened the shootout with a goal for the Broncos but Justin Paulic stopped Andrew Johnson and Colby Cave to earn the win. The Broncos are now 1-5 in shootouts and have only scored twice on 17 attempts and allowed seven goals on 17 attempts.
The Broncos were outshot 25-11 over the opening 40 minutes and trailed 2-0 on goals from Point and Jack Rodewald.
They dominated the third period and tied the game with Jay Merkley's 16th goal and a powerplay goal from Brycen Martin.
Eetu Laurikainen took the shootout loss with 33 saves, while Paulic made 26 saves in the win.
The Broncos had plenty of quality scoring chances only to see three shots go off the iron, numerous pucks roll through the crease, and others simple hit an unknowing Paulic.
"Yeah it is always frustrating when your guys can't bury," admitted Lernout. "But I mean we play them tomorrow so hopefully it will be better."
The Broncos remain first in the East Division with a 20-13-1-5 record. Moose Jaw improved to 11-21-3-3 with their third straight win.
"We had 10 days off and we are not used to have 10 days off," said Lernout of the break. "We have to get our legs back and get our conditioning back."
The two teams will play again in Moose Jaw Saturday. "We just have to show up to play in the first period and go out and play hard," said Lernout.
