Wildcats open Mac's Tournament with shutout win

Swift Current Wildcats

The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats opened the Mac's AAA Midget World Invitational Tournament with a 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Ice Friday afternoon.

Captain Brooklyn Haubrich led the Wildcats with two goals and an assist and Jasey Book earned the shutout in goal.

Rookie Kate Scidmore and Haubrich scored in the first period for a 2-0 lead before a scoreless second period. Haubrich and rookie Merissa Zerr added insurance markers in the third period. Gabrielle Gray, Karlie Bell, Brenna Thomson, and Mikayla Swallow all added assists.

Book stopped all 23 shots she faced for the shutout. The Wildcats beat Michelle Kerdes for four goals on only 14 shots. The game featured only eight minutes in penalties and the Wildcats were only whistled for one minor penalty.

The Wildcats will face the Edmonton Thunder on Saturday at 8 a.m. Edmonton opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flyers on Boxing Day.
