The 2013 holiday season was a memorable one for Swift Current’s Jenna Smith as she helped Canada to a gold medal in women’s ice hockey at the 2013 Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy.
Canada completed a dominating tournament with a 5-0 win over Russia on Friday to finish 7-0 while outscoring their opponents 77-2.
“It was a pretty amazing feeling just knowing everyone was there cheering for us and everyone back home was rooting for us. Playing on a team with 20 new girls, I don’t know, it was a pretty special feeling and we all bonded over it,” said Smith.
Smith had two goals and an assist in the gold medal game as Canada won its third straight gold medal since the sport was introduced at the biennial Games in China in 2009. Canada is now 21-0 and has outscored its opponents 174-12 over three tournaments.
Smith finished the tournament with five goals, nine assists, and a +19 rating in seven games.
“I thought it was good. I was going in there knowing there was a lot of really good players from the east that I had watched and played against before. I knew they were some excellent hockey players. So I was pretty proud of myself to be able to go in there and score some goals, especially some big goals in the gold medal game.”
