Laurikainen's 47 saves not enough for win against visting Brandon Wheat Kings
2013 Swift Current Broncos
A weary Swift Current Broncos team needed 47 saves from Eetu Laurikainen to salvage a single point in a 3-2 shootout loss to the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.
The overage goaltender stopped 47 of 49 shots over 65 minutes and stopped Tim McGauley and Richard Nejezchleb in the shootout but Peter Quenneville's goal held up when Jordan Papirny turned aside Dillon Heatherington, Connor Sanvido, and Colby Cave.
Rookie Glenn Gawdin and Colby Cave scored for the Broncos, while Rihards Bukarts and McGauley replied for Brandon.
The Broncos had the best chance in overtime when Jay Merkley wired a slpshot off the post with 1:30 left in the five-minute extra period.
Swift Current dropped to 15-9-0-3 and are now winless in their past three games on the heels of a nine-game winning streak, while Brandon improved to 13-11-0-0 with their fourth consecutive win.
The Broncos will be on the road again Wednesday when they travel north to visit the Prince Albert Raiders (13-8-2-0).
Bronco Bits: Graham Black extended his point streak with an assist to 12 games with 21 points over that stretch. Import defenseman Julius Honka missed the game due to ilness, while forwards Coda Gordon and Justin Spagrud both left the game and did not return. The Broncos have only scored one goal in 12 shootout attempts this season. Sanvido has the Broncos' only shootout goal but dropped to one-for-four when he was unable to beat Papirny. The Broncos are now 10-1-0-2 at home and 11-2-0-2 against East Division opposition.
