The Swift Current Broncos' nine game winning streak came to an end in a 3-2 shootout loss to the host Calgary Hitmen Friday.
The Broncos held a one-goal lead late until Kenton Helgesen scored with 54 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, the first five shooters failed to score before Radel Fazleev scored for Calgary to hand the Broncos their first loss since October 22.
Greg Chase had given the Hitmen a 1-0 lead with a goal early in the second period. Graham Black and Jay Merkley scored powerplay goals one minute apart to give the Broncos a lead that would last until the final minute of regulation.
Landon Bow got the start for the Broncos and made 35 saves on 37 shots. Chris Driedger picked up the win with 37 saves before stopping Coda Gordon, Connor Sanvido and Black in the shootout.
The Broncos remain in second spot in the Eastern Conference with a 15-8-0-2 record, while Calgary is fifth with an 11-6-1-3 mark.
The Broncos will be in Edmonton Saturday to visit the fourth-place Oil Kings (13-8-0-1).
Bronco Bits: Black extended his point streak to 10 games with 18 points over that stretch. The Broncos finished two-for-five on the powerplay and now sit third in the WHL with a 27.3 percent success rate. The Broncos lead the WHL with a 10-1-0-1 record at home but are only 5-7-0-1 on the road this season. The Broncos have scored on only one of nine attempts in the shootout this season with one win and two losses. Sanvido has the Broncos only shootout goal so far this season.
