The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires couldn’t overcome one of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League’s top teams Thursday in a 5-1 loss to the visiting Battlefords Stars.
Both teams scored powerplay goals but it was the Stars who scored while shorthanded and they added three goals at even strength.
Chaseton Sare scored the Legionnaires’ only goal midway through the second period on the powerplay with assists from Dawson Tangen and Carter Doerksen to tie the game 1-1.
Battlefords responded with four unanswered goals, including a shorthanded goal from Josh Bly with only 31 seconds left in the second period to make it 3-1. Bly added a third-period goal during a three-point night. Troy Gerein, Spencer Bast, and Graham Gove also scored for the Stars.
Shane Blomquist suffered the loss with 30 saves on 35 shots. Rylan Toth picked up the win for the visitors with 21 saves.
The Stars moved into top spot in the SMAAAHL with a 5-0-1-0 record, while Swift Current dropped to 1-6-1-0.
The Legionnaires will be back at home this weekend to face the Tisdale Trojans (5-1-0-0) on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Credit Union iplex.
