The Swift Current Legionnaires topped the Saskatoon Contacts for their first regular season win in 2013-14
The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires picked up their first win of the 2013-14 Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League regular season with a 3-1 victory over the host Saskatoon Contacts Sunday.
Shane Blomquist made 30 saves and the Legionnaires got goals from three different skaters in the win.
The Contacts led 1-0 after one period on a Kade Kehoe powerplay goal. Swift Current responded in the second period with a powerplay goal from Bryce Hall and a shorthanded goal from Connor Odelein. Kolby Johnson helped seal the win in the third period with another powerplay goal. Chaseton Sare added two assists, while Odelein and Reid Fritzke added singles.
Saturday, the Legionnaires were on the wrong end of a 5-2 final against the host Saskatoon Blazers. The Legionnaires outshot the Blazers 33-29 but could only beat Brett Pongracz for two goals. Tanner Brewster and Cody Spagrud scored for Swift Current with assists from Fritzke, Hall, and Tristan Hermanson. Blomquist suffered the loss with 24 saves.
The Legionnaires earned a brief 2-1 lead when Spagrud and Brewster scored 47 seconds apart in the second period before the Blazers counted the final four goals.
Sunday’s win moved the Legionnaires record to 1-5-1-0 on the season. The Legionnaires are back on home ice tonight when the Battlefords Stars (4-0-1-0) visit the Credit Union iplex at 8:15 p.m.
The Legionnaires will also host the Tisdale Trojans (4-1-0-0) on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Trojans’ line-up includes Swift Current Broncos prospect Brandon Arnold and former Bantam Raiders forward Tanner Nagel.
