Broncos net five straight goals to erase early deficit

The Swift Current Broncos scored five unanswered goals to snap a two-game losing streak in a 5-2 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants Saturday.

The Broncos trailed 2-0 after an awful opening 20 minutes but rebounded with two goals in the second period and three in the third to improve to 6-3-0-1 in their final game before heading west for their five-game U.S. Division road trip.

Zac Mackay netted the game winner 1:20 into the third period when he won an offensive zone face-off, headed to the high slot, and then deflected home a Brett Lernout point shot through the legs of Jared Rathjen.

"That was a big win for us,” said Mackay. “We came out pretty slow in the first. We expected them to be a hard working team in the first and they were, we just didn’t seem ready for it. We battled back in the second and third and I thought we showed a really good effort out there in those two periods.”

Glenn Gawdin scored his first Western Hockey League goal to add some insurance and Bobby Zinkan closed the scoring with his second of the season.

“Yeah it felt great,” said Gawdin of his first WHL goal. “I have kind of been struggling in that department lately and I think I overthought it. I am happy to get the first one out of the way.”

The Broncos appeared to be on the verge of a third straight loss after being out-shot 20-6 in the opening stanza and allowing goals to Andreas Eder and Joel Hamilton to trail 2-0 at the intermission.

They were a different team in the second period as they responded with a powerplay goal from Julius Honka and the game-tying marker from Colby Cave on a soft shot that Rathjen would likely want to have back. Honka was the only Bronco to finish with more than one point as he added two assists and finished plus-two on the evening.

Eetu Laurikainen earned the win with 35 saves on 37 shots to improve to 3-3-0-1 for the Broncos.

Rathjen made 28 saves as Vancouver dropped to 1-7-1-1 and finished without a win on their six-game East Division road trip.

The Broncos will begin their road trip on Wednesday in Spokane in their first of five games in seven days.
