Chase power play goal lifts Hitmen over Broncos

The Swift Current Broncos suffered their first home regulation loss of the season when the visiting Calgary Hitmen skated to a 5-4 victory at the Credit Union iPlex on Wednesday night.

Greg Chase's eighth goal of the season just 30 seconds into the third period on the power play stood up as the game winner.

Calgary showed their resiliency by erasing deficits of 3-1 and 4-2 to score the come from behind victory. The Hitmen were outshot by a 13-12 margin after one period, but they rebounded to enjoy a 22-11 edge in shots over the final 40 minutes.

Both teams scored on their first shots on goal, with Calgary's Radel Fazleev counting his first career WHL goal just 13 seconds after the opening face-off. Swift Current replied at the 3:56 mark of the period when Colby Cave redirected his fifth of the year.

The Broncos were led offensively by Coda Gordon who scored goals 7:30 apart in the first period to help Swift Current to a 3-1 advantage.

But Calgary's Zane Jones pulled the Hitmen to within a goal with his second of the year with just 30 second left in the opening period.

Tanner LeSann opened a 4-2 Broncos lead midway through the middle period when he counted his second of the year.

Calgary replied 28 seconds later when Calder Brooks scored his first of the year, and the Hitmen tied the game at 4-4 after two periods when Fazleev scored his second of the game with 1:48 left in the frame.

Hitmen net minder Mack Shields won his second start of the year after turning aside 20 of 24 shots.

Eetu Laurikainen is now 2-2-0-1 on the year after giving up five goals on 34 shots in 58:57 of play.

Calgary improves to 4-3-0-0 on the season, while Swift Current falls to 4-1-0-1 on home ice and is now 5-2-0-1 overall.

The Broncos aim to get back on track this weekend when they travel to Saskatoon to face the Blades on Friday, and they return to home ice to clash with the Vancouver Giants on Saturday.
