Justin Paulic stops all three Broncos in a shootout after 42-save performance
The Swift Current Broncos failed to score on any of their three shootout attempts in a 3-2 shootout loss to the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors Friday.
Justin Paulic stopped Julius Honka, Graham Black, and Connor Sanvido in the shootout after making 42 saves in regulation and overtime.
The Broncos fell behind on a Ben Duperreault goal in the first period. They replied with second-period goals from Zac Mackay and Black to take a 2-1 lead. Brayden Point tied it on a five-on-three man-advantage with 1:15 left in the second period before scoreless third and overtime periods.
Eetu Laurikainen suffered the shootout loss with 35 saves on 37 shots. Todd Fiddler beat him on Moose Jaw's first shot in the shootout before Point wired one of the crossbar as the Broncos dropped to 2-0-0-1.
"We had 44 shots on the board. We had some quality chances and we just couldn't bury," said Broncos captain Colby Cave when reflecting on a number of missed opportunities throughout the contest. "I thought the team battled really hard and kind of had that unlucky bounce on the five-on-three where it bounced right to the guy and he put it in."
Honka, the WHL's reigning Player of the Week, picked up assists on both goals and now has seven points in his first three WHL games.
The Broncos will be on the road Saturday to visit the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Tigers (2-1-0-0) are coming off a 4-3 loss to Edmonton on Friday.
"We can't make up excuses," added Cave. That first goal we left them wide open in front. We just need to come back tomorrow, get it by us, and get ready for Medicine Hat."
The Broncos have fallen behind in each of their first three games of the regular season.
"It is a little bit of a concern, but we have a good group of guys in here. We will sit down with the coaches and watch the video tomorrow. We know we have to come out with a better start and hop on Medicine Hat because it is a tough building to play in on the road."
