Broncos rookie defenseman captures WHL after six-point weekend
Julius Honka’s impressive debut for the Swift Current Broncos led to some individual accolades.
The rookie defenseman was named the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week after posting six points in his first two Western Hockey League games.
The Jyvaskyla, Finland native scored a goal, added five assists, and posted a plus-four rating in two wins over the Regina Pats to open the regular season. He had a goal and two assists in a 7-2 win Thursday and then assisted on all three powerplay goals in the Broncos 3-2 win at home Saturday.
Honka was also named one of the WHL’s seven A skaters in the National Hockey League Central Scouting preliminary watch list for the 2014 Entry Draft.
The 5’11’’, 175-pound blueliner was drafted 34th overall in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.
