The Swift Current Broncos remain unbeaten in the Western Hockey League preseason with a 6-3 win over the host Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday in St. Albert.
The Broncos got first period goals from Tyler Steenbergen, Jay Merkley, and Julius Honka to lead 3-1 after 20 minutes.
Edmonton responded with three straight goals before Glenn Gawdin restored a one-goal lead midway through the second period. Veteran Coda Gordon added a third-period insurance goal and Bobby Zinkan added his second of the preseason to close the scoring.
Landon Bow picked up the win in goal for Swift Current as he made 33 saves on 36 shots.
Tristan Jarry allowed four goals on 14 shots in the start for Edmonton. Partrick Dea worked the second half of the contest and allowed two goals on 13 shots.
Cody Corbett scored twice for Edmonton and Mitchell Walter added a single.
The Broncos finished one for six on the powerplay with the goal coming off the stick of Honka, the third goal in two preseason games for the rookie import defenseman.
Graham Black wore the 'C' and finished with two assists for the Broncos. Jake DeBrusk also had three helpers in the win for Swift Current as he pushes to crack the roster as a 17-year-old rookie. Gawdin added two assists in a three-point outing and Merkley and Gordon both added assists for two-point outings.
Zinkan dropped the mitts with Curtis Lazar with 1:15 remaining to complete a Gordie Howe hat trick after assisting on the opening goal.
The Broncos will be right back in action Sunday when they face the Calgary Hitmen in St. Albert at 3 p.m.
