Julius Honka's debut in a Swift Current Broncos uniform was a memorable one. The import defenseman scored twice, including a highlight reel game winner, in a 5-4 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors Tuesday at the Credit Union iplex.
Honka dispalyed a wide array of skills and mastery of the puck during his debut. His first goal came on a point shot on the powerplay in the second period. His second goal came moments after a big neutral zone hit after which he raced up ice and undressed Dustin Perillat before firing the puck high to the glove side past Brody Wilms for a 5-3 lead 4:23 into the third period.
Zac Mackay, Bobby Zinkan, and Jake DeBrusk also scored in the win. Travis Child made 25 saves on 29 shots. Mackay wore the captain's C and added two assists for a three-point outing. Veterans Justin Spagrud and Brycen Martin added two assists apiece.
Colton McCarthy, Josh Uhrich, Ben Duperreault, and Ryan Bowen replied for Moose Jaw in game that featured the younger players from both teams' rosters.
"I think we played pretty good," said DeBrusk, a 17-year-old forward. "I think we got better as the game went on. It was pretty physical and pretty intense being Moose Jaw. Yeah it was a pretty good game overall."
It was Debrusk's first WHL game after injurying himself early in camp last season.
"I felt pretty good and I got better as the game went on. Obviously I was a little nervous before game. I thought I just got better shift by shift."
15-year-old forward Cole Johnson made his debut one day after signing with the Broncos.
"I think we played good and battled hard," said the Broncos second round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. "In the second period I think we got a little loose but then we picked it back up in the third. I thought everybody played a good game."
The Broncos will continue the exhibition season Saturday when they visit the Oil Kings and Sunday when they face the Calgary Hitmen.
