In their debut season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League, the Millar College of the Bible Edge mens futsal team is proving that they are a contender despite being short on futsal experience.
The Edge opened their first ever season of futsal with a win and two losses during a January tournament in Calgary. They hosted a tournament this weekend in Swift Current and finished unbeaten against the same three teams as they trend upwards heading into Provincials.
“They tied twice and won once and I think it was a good step forward for them,” said coach Phil Ruten. “I thought they played very well against very good competition. They were very tight games and the teams are just so even. I am very happy with how they played.”
Friday, the Edge opened the tournament with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the Ambrose Lions out of Calgary.
Saturday, they battled their way to a 3-3 draw with the Olds College Broncos.
The Edge picked up their second win of the season Saturday evening with a 5-3 win over the Prairie Pilots from Three Hills, AB. “That last game was against a very good team and we just managed to get a couple more goals. It was back and forth,” said Ruten.
The tournament was hosted by Millar College at the Swift Current Stockade.
“It has been really good. I think the teams have really enjoyed this venue. It is excellent and I think it has been extremely positive,” noted Ruten.
Ruten added that he hoped to bring another ACAL futsal tournament back to Swift Current in the near future.
