The Swift Current Broncos remained idle during the Western Hockey League’s trade deadline on Thursday, which passed at 4 p.m. local time.

The Broncos made one deal on Monday leading up to the deadline acquiring 17-year-old forward Jay Merkley from the Lethbridge Hurricanes for Josh Derko and a draft pick in 2014. Merkley scored a powerplay goal during Wednesday 5-2 win in his first game in a Broncos uniform.

It was a relatively quiet trade deadline across the league with only eight deals taking place on Thursday.

One of the most significant transactions saw the Spokane Chiefs acquire import Alessio Bertaggia from the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Swiss forward had 34 points in 30 games for Brandon this season and posted four points in six games at the World Junior Championships in Russia.

The Saskatoon Blades, who will host the 2013 Mastercard Memorial Cup, were in on half the trades Thursday, including the addition of overager Michael Ferland from Brandon.
